Celebrating Southeast of Saturn, Vol. 2

Friday, December 2nd - 5:00 p.m.

On Friday, December 2nd at 5:00 p.m., Electric Fetus and Third Man Records will celebrate the release of Southeast of Saturn, Vol. 2, with a tribute to the 27 Various featuring the original members Bart Bakker and Mike Reiter, who will be joined by Casey Virock, Kris Johnson, and Janey Winterbauer.

This event is free and open to all ages.

The Southeast of Saturn, Vol. 2 compilation is a follow up to 2020’s Southeast of Saturn, a collection of music from Detroit’s space-rock/shoegaze/dream pop scene of the ‘90s. The second volume expands upon the Michigan-centric aural delights purveyed on Vol. 1, by including groups from throughout the Midwest. Highlighting groups spanning Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, Vol. 2 works to cement the Midwest's status as a breeding ground for the space-rock and shoegaze subgenres, which more famously burgeoned in the UK.

Ten Bands One Cause

Ten Bands One Cause Announces 2022 Vinyl Lineup of Albums Benefitting Red Door Community

This year's vinyl includes titles by Nas, The Black Keys, Colter Wall, The Allman Brothers, Judah and the Lion, Senses Fail, The Bangles, Turnpike Troubadours, Jungle Fire and BADBADNOTGOOD.

Pink vinyl will be pressed for each title, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting Red Door Community, where no one faces cancer alone. The nonprofit's mission is to create a welcoming community of FREE cancer support to bring knowledge, hope and empowerment to anyone and everyone impacted by cancer and their families.

The story of The Bible begins with Wagner up in the middle of the night during the first year of the plague, watching his new friend from Minneapolis, Andrew Broder, play a Wurlitzer on Instagram Live. Broder was one in a group of Minneapolis musicians Wagner had met prior to the pandemic through mutual friend Justin Vernon (Bon Iver). After watching the livestream, he called Broder up. “Dude, I’ll get you in a studio,” he says, “you just go in there for like three or four hours and do your thing.” Broder sent him back twelve 20 minute-long pieces. And then Wagner found himself in Minneapolis, in the sweltering summer of 2021, in a decommissioned paint factory turned practice space. Wagner would find an immediate musical spark with Broder & his musical partner Ryan Olson (Gayngs, contributor to Taylor Swift's Evermore). Olson contributes greatly to the album, both with arrangements & production. “Ryan and Andrew, they’re like two sides of my personality,” Wagner says. “And if you put them together as a team, they represent me.” Good thing, because this would be the first time Wagner let somebody else—people who weren’t even from Nashville—produce a Lambchop record.

The music on The Bible is more unpredictable than it’s ever been on a Lambchop record. Jazz careening into country, into disco, into funk, and back to country. All tied together with Wagner’s own voice, born from a perspective on his own life inspired by taking care of his father at the end of his life. The sounds all jumbled together with snatches of observations, words torn from the headlines in Minneapolis—bumper stickers on the freeway, or graffiti from outside that decommissioned paint factory. Through the weeks, musicians (local & non-local) would come & go, putting their own thumbprints on this bible. Perhaps most strikingly, contributions from two different vocal choirs (Bells of the Lakes & Lutheran Bells) & gorgeous string arrangements courtesy of yMusic co-founder C.J. Camerieri (who has also arranged strings for Sufjan Stevens, Antony & the Johnsons & The National).

The paradoxical title of Dosh’s new album, Tomorrow 1972, distills the exploratory rootedness central to the producer and performer’s aesthetic. Like everything Dosh has put out since coming to prominence as a pioneer of loop-based multigenre multi-instrumentalism, the album uses old and new technology to seek uncharted ground, but it also takes cues from a lifetime of varied listening and sometimes evokes the perpetually contemporary fusion of Dosh’s babyhood (the album title, you may have guessed, contains the year of his birth) as well as hip-hop, minimalism, harmolodics, Midwestern hybridists from Tortoise to Happy Apple, and a hundred other touchstones that equally revere experimentation and groove.

With Murph in Los Angeles, bassist Tord Øverland Knudsen in Oslo and drummer Dan Haggis in London, they discussed each day’s plan via Zoom, then recorded separately, sending individual files to producers Jacknife Lee (U2, The Killers), Gabe Simon (Dua Lipa, Lana Del Rey), Paul Meaney (Twenty One Pilots, Nothing But Thieves) and Mark Crew (Bastille, Rag‘n’Bone Man) to mix into the finished tracks. “It was pure madness, to be honest,” explains Murph.

Duluth Store Permanently Closed

After 33 years in business, we’ve made the difficult decision to permanently close our Duluth location after having to shut down for COVID-19 since March 2020.

It’s been incredible to be a part of the very special Duluth community and music scene, and we have great and loyal customers who we will miss. We thank you for your support and patronage.

The onset of COVID in the Spring of 2020, along with various challenges we’ve faced in Duluth — changing retail environment, the water main break, road construction, and more — has made maintaining a brick-and-mortar presence in the city an uphill climb and not viable.

We’ve been struggling to get out of the red for several years now in Duluth and it’s just not realistic to make it work and have a successful location in the market. Therefore, we’ve decided to focus on our Minneapolis location exclusively and advance and evolve that store.

We are working on exciting things for our Minneapolis location and our web business, and we will be sharing more news very soon. In the meantime, from June 10 through June 30 the Minneapolis Electric Fetus is handing out 20 percent off punch cards good for three visits in the month of July.

We very much appreciate our time in Duluth, our loyal customers, and the community’s support over the years, and we look forward to what’s next at our Minneapolis store, on ElectricFetus.com, and our Discogs page.

Electric Fetus, Minneapolis will be re-opening to the public starting Wednesday, May 27th at 10:00 a.m. with a maximum of 10 customers in the store at once. Staff will be wearing masks, and customers will be required to as well.

Store hours will be changed to Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
